20 Years for Stabbing Nurse; Wrong-Knee Surgery Suit; Wound Care Scandal

A woman in Missouri was sentenced to 20 years in prison for stabbing a nurse and a paramedic. (First Alert 4)

A basketball player in Ohio has filed suit alleging that Atiba Jackson, MD, performed arthroscopy on the wrong knee. (WHIO)

California emergency physician Ariana Dillman, MD, was ordered to do drug and alcohol testing after slurring her words while at work. (ABC 10)

A podiatrist and a pharmaceutical sales rep were each sentenced to more than 5 years in prison because the podiatrist allowed the sales rep to perform sharp wound debridement on patients, and then billed federal insurers as if a doctor performed the procedures, federal prosecutors said.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is pursuing the leadership of a health and wellness multi-level marketing scheme for allegedly using false or baseless earnings claims to recruit workers, the agency announced.

The FTC also settled with a supplement business that allegedly deceptively advertised the effectiveness of a range of supplements supporting height and growth in children and teens, the agency said.

Louisiana physician Robert Tassin, MD, was sentenced to 3 years of probation for ordering medically unnecessary cancer genetic tests and billing federal insurers $6.6 million, federal prosecutors said.

A Florida nursing assistant was sentenced to 9 years in prison for his role in an $11.4 million scheme in which hundreds of Medicare beneficiaries were sent orthotic braces they didn’t need, according to the U.S. Department of Justice.

A New York nurse practitioner pleaded guilty to possessing controlled substances with the intent to distribute them, according to federal prosecutors.
