CDC Employee Stole $190K; Camp Mystic Nurse Accused; Dead Man’s Medicaid Benefits

A former CDC supervisor pleaded guilty to stealing more than $190,000 by creating fake invoices from “vendors” that were ultimately paid to an account she controlled, federal prosecutors said.

The Texas nursing board suspended the license of the chief medical officer of Camp Mystic — the girls’ camp hit by catastrophic flooding that killed 25 last year — accusing her of not helping children evacuate. (NBC News)

A payroll manager at a doctor’s office in Miami was accused of stealing $1.5 million by overpaying herself and spending company funds on personal expenses. (Miami Herald)

Public safety leaders in Ohio — including a former police chief and a former fire chief — say they, too, were abused by the late Richard Strauss, MD, the doctor at the center of the Ohio State University abuse scandal. (Ohio Capital Journal)

Lincoln Erickson, MD, a medical resident in Detroit, pleaded guilty to receiving child pornography. He was arrested in December and federal agents said they discovered videos of minors engaging in sex acts and artificial intelligence-generated child pornography on his phone. (Los Angeles Magazine)

An Idaho man was convicted for stealing a dead man’s identity and pulling tens of thousands of dollars in government benefits, including Medicaid, federal prosecutors said.

A former nurse in Rhode Island was convicted of sexually assaulting and abusing patients. (WJAR)

The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) announced that it charged 15 defendants in various alleged healthcare fraud schemes, including the owners of child care centers and Medicaid providers. One involved an alleged $47 million autism therapy fraud scheme, in which some of the defendants billed for services that were never provided.

Pennsylvania podiatrist Matthew Sabo, DPM, pleaded guilty to overprescribing opioids and abusing patients. (WPXI)

A Georgian citizen was sentenced to more than 3 years in prison for money laundering tied to a fake medical supply company that billed for medical supplies, including orthotic braces and wound dressings, that were never provided to patients, the DOJ announced.

An advanced practice registered nurse was charged in a scheme in which she would submit false claims for medication management services that were never provided to Medicaid patients, federal prosecutors said.
