The Trump administration moved quickly to dismantle the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) after taking office in early 2025, implementing a funding freeze, issuing stop-work orders, and carrying out mass layoffs. At the time, the global public health community warned that such actions could have significant short- and long-term consequences affecting millions globally.
Now, with the World Health Organization declaring the Ebola outbreak in Central Africa a global health emergency, experts argue that the USAID cuts have weakened the U.S. and global response to the current crisis as well as future international health emergencies.
