Nurse Knocked Unconscious; Doc’s Hidden Camera Accusation; Doc Gets 7 Years

Aetna will pay $118 million to resolve allegations that it submitted inaccurate and untruthful diagnosis codes for its Medicare Advantage plan enrollees in order to increase its payments, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said.

Leapfrog Group will have to withdraw safety grades for five Florida hospitals after a federal judge ruled its ranking constitutes an “unfair and deceptive business practice.” The judge found Leapfrog deliberately punished the hospitals for not participating in its voluntary survey by assigning them artificially low scores with no scientific basis. The owner of a durable medical equipment company was sentenced to 90 months in prison for his role in a nearly $60 million Medicare fraud case involving kickbacks and submitting claims for medically unnecessary products, DOJ said.

Kansas anesthesiologist Scott Taggart Roethle, MD, was sentenced to 3 years in prison for taking hundreds of thousands of dollars in kickbacks to order medically unnecessary orthotic braces for thousands of patients, according to federal prosecutors.
