These Are the Largest Academic Medical Centers in the U.S.

Healthcare analytics company Definitive Healthcare released a ranking of the 25 largest academic medical centers as measured by the number of interns and residents.

By far the largest medical center by this metric was NewYork-Presbyterian Weill Cornell Medical Center in New York City, which is affiliated with Weill Cornell Medicine, with 1,945 interns and residents.

Second on the list is another New York City academic medical center: Tisch Hospital, affiliated with the New York University School of Medicine with 1,333 interns and residents. These two hospitals also rank as one and two in terms of hospitals in New York and in the U.S., with the highest net patient revenue.

While the top two institutions are both in New York City, the rest of the top 25 are more geographically diverse.

For this report, the company looked at the 220 academic medical centers across the U.S. and ranked them by the number of graduates using Definitive Healthcare’s HospitalView product and intern and resident data from the Medicare Cost Report. They used the most recent 12-month interval tracked in their database.

The report noted that graduate medical education programs are capped by Medicare and that “expanding these caps could help to increase the number of students interested in pursuing careers in medicine.”

The report also noted the difference between academic medical centers and teaching hospitals. Academic medical centers provide patient care while also educating healthcare providers. They are affiliated with at least one accredited medical school and confer medical degrees. Teaching hospitals, on the other hand, don’t issue medical degrees even if they might be affiliated with a medical school.
