Hantavirus Webinar May 12: What You Need to Know

Hantavirus has been making headlines after an outbreak linked to a cruise ship was associated with at least three deaths. It’s been confirmed that Andes virus — a type of hantavirus that causes cardiopulmonary syndrome and is capable of human-to-human transmission — is responsible.

Passengers on that ship have since returned home, either through government repatriation efforts, or after disembarking during a planned stop in the remote island of St. Helena on April 24 — a scoop that MedPage Today broke last week.

Should the public be concerned? While the outbreak is not considered a pandemic threat, there are questions about the number of potential infections, the high mortality rate associated with the virus, and the lack of specialized treatments.

In this live conversation on Tuesday, May 12, an infectious disease expert will explain what is currently known about hantavirus transmission and risk, and answer key questions about public health prevention and preparedness.

Featuring:

  • Jeremy Faust, MD, editor-in-chief at MedPage Today (moderator)
  • Boghuma K. Titanji, MD, PhD, MSc, DTM&H, infectious diseases physician and researcher, and an assistant professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine
